The quiet life of a scholar, Alain Tournville, is thrown into disarray when he acquires documents that prove a conflict is about to engulf the whole of Agriland, anciently known as Oscalidor. Blamed for a sudden death, he is forced to flee for his life, determined to gain the Seven Crowns of legend that will enable the High King of Oscalidor to return and prevent war. An ardent republican, he nevertheless manages to save Princess Eleanor from the hands of brigands and they make their escape together. His views are challenged as the two of them undergo peril after peril. Can he gain the Seven Crowns? But is there any truth in the ancient legend?

Clerk Alain Tournville, accused of murder, has acquired two of the Seven Crowns of Oscalidor that are needed to persuade the High Kings to return and thus avert the war that is threatening to engulf Agriland. Now he faces a three-fold challenge: to gain the Crowns in distant Fenland, under siege by enemy forces; in the mightiest and most secure castle in the land; and in the rainy and windswept island of Kuln, riven by internecine warfare. So far he has had the help of Princess Eleanor of Thalyssis, but now she wants to return home, and he is faced with the prospect of the loss of his companion of many adventures (see Seven Crowns of Oscalidor:1). Can Alain continue his journey alone? How can he succeed in his quest for the Crowns?
